Waynesville, N.C. - Western Carolina made up three strokes on first-round leading East Tennessee State over the final 18 holes, rallying from second-place to win its fifth-consecutive Wachovia - Great Smokies Intercollegiate by one stroke at the par 72, 5,915-yard Waynesville Country Club. Austin Peay State's Staci Lynch carded a two-round 140 to break the Catamounts' string of five-straight individual winners by taking the medalist honors on the weekend.
Western Carolina, which had opened the season with two-consecutive, third-place finishes, broke into the win column for the first-time this season firing 294 on Sunday for a two-round score of 586. East Tennessee State shot 298 over the final round to stand as the tournament runner-up for the second-straight season. Winthrop moved up one spot from its first round position to place third (595), followed by South Alabama (596) in fourth and a four-way tie for fifth including Xavier, Elon, Belmont, and Marshall all finishing at 606. Rounding out the top 10 were UAB and Charleston Southern tied for ninth with totals of 611.
Western's 586 tied its score from 2002 in the same tournament - which ironically enough started the current string of five-straight tournament championships for the Catamounts. WCU has now finished in the top five in tournament play nine-straight times and 13 of its last 14 events dating back to the spring of 2005.
Lynch, who entered Sunday tied for first after an opening 71, carded the second-lowest round of the tournament, 69, to win by two strokes over Charleston Southern's Olivia Higgins, who shot 68 on Sunday to post the lowest round over the 36-hole tournament. Higgins also led all 119 players with 11 birdies, followed by nine by Lynch.
Western Carolina freshman Desiree Karlsson recorded her best-ever collegiate finish in third with a two round 143. Yet, it was her heroics on the 18th hole - her 17th with the shot gun start - that helped WCU to the team title. After shooting long on her second shot, Karlsson chipped in for eagle from 22 yards out to move to one-under for the day. She would par the final hole (number one Carolina) to post her first-ever below-par score of 71.
Rounding out the individual top five were Kate O'Sullivan of High Point with a 144 and last week's Sea Trail Intercollegiate winner, Danielle Mills of Elon, with a 145.
WCU junior Kandy Carland, one day after shooting her career-low round of 71, posted a sixth-place finish to put two Catamounts in the top 10. Junior Malin Fryk fell from her first-place tie but managed to finish tied for 14th on the weekend shooting 149. Western's lone senior, Bianca Melone, rallied from a 46th-place tie on Saturday to stand tied for 21st with an even-par 72 on Sunday for a two-day total of 150, and freshman Elin Mickelsson posted a 56th-place performance with a 155, shaving three strokes off her first round 79 to shoot 76 on the final 18.
Western Carolina and head coach Steve Lott will take a well-deserved break before returning to action at the Univ. of Cincinnati Fall Classic in Batavia, Ohio on Oct.16 and 17.
