Waynesville, N.C. - East Tennessee State shot an opening round 289 to lead by three strokes over Western Carolina at the eighth-annual Wachovia - Great Smokies Intercollegiate at the par 72, 5,915-yard Waynesville Country Club. Four players each shot a one-under 71 on Saturday to stand tied atop the leader board with 18 holes left to play.
Both of Western's team and individual performances on Saturday leave them a solid chance of continuing their active streaks of five-straight individual medalists and four-straight team titles in Sunday's final round which tees off at 9:30 am.
East Tennessee State's 289 tied for the fifth-best, single-round in tournament history and leads Western by three strokes after the Catamounts carded an opening-round 292. Gardner-Webb is third, 10-strokes behind Western, with Winthrop (303) and South Alabama (304) rounding out the top five.
Individually, two Catamount juniors stand tied with three others entering Sunday's round. Malin Fryk shot 35 and 36 to record her one-under 71, while Kandy Carland went low on the front nine with a 33 followed by a 38 on the second nine to shoot 71. The below-par round for Carland was the first of her career, while Fryk tied her career low round of 71. ETSU's Lucy Gould and Staci Lynch of Austin Peay State also fired a one-under round for the four-way tie.
Freshman Desiree Karlsson recovered from a double-bogey on her opening hole to shoot even-par to stand tied for fifth just one stroke off the lead. Karlsson's 72 was her the best of her three-match collegiate career. Rounding out the scoring for Western on the afternoon were senior Bianca Melone, who battled through back pain after her third hole of the day to shoot 78 to stand tied for 46th and freshman Elin Mickelsson, who also saw the athletic trainer following her round with back pain, tied for 57th with a 79.

Again, the final round tees off with a shotgun start at 9:30 am on Sunday morning from the Waynesville Country Club. Team and individual awards, as well as an all-tournament team, will be named at the conclusion of tournament play. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
