CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's golf stands in third after the first round of play at the Great Smokies Women's Collegiate held at Waynesville Country Club.

The Catamounts, with a team score of 297, are three strokes off the leader, Belmont, who ended day one with a team score of 294. Fellow Southern Conference member Elon is one stroke head of Western Carolina with 296.
Sophomore Desiree Karlsson currently leads the Catamount team, entering the clubhouse in fourth place. She shot 71 after the first round, with an even 35 on both nines.
South Alabama's Elin Andersson shot a scorching 67 in the first day of play. Belmon's Lorie Warren and Elon's Fredrique Bruell are one stroke behind with a 69.
Freshman Katja Dammann is the only other Catamount in the top-10, finishing day one with a score of 72 and is tied for sixth place. Kandy Carland hit a 76 and is tied for 18th.
The final round tees off with a shotgun start at 9:30 am on Sunday morning from the Waynesville Country Club. Team and individual awards, as well as an all-tournament team, will be named at the conclusion of tournament play. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
