Sunset Beach, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's golf team kept their day one lead to win the Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate with a score of 610, which was 12 strokes better than second-place Longwood University's 622. The Cats also had the event's individual winner in sophomore Brandy Andersen, who carded a 148 for the two-rounds.

Andersen, the reigning SoCon Champion, wins her third medalist honor in her short career, while her 148 is the fifth-best two-round score in WCU history. The Orlando, Fla., native fired a 71 on day one and a 77 in the second round. Andersen held off teammate and fellow Orlando product Bianca Melone for the title. Melone and Maria Dunne (Bethune-Cookman) each carded a 149 for the event to finish tied for second. Coming into the final hole, Andersen and Melone both trailed Dunne by one shot. However, Melone birdied the hole to tie for the lead and 10 minutes later, Andersen eagled on the 18th to edge the two by one stroke.

Western Carolina had two other golfers finish among the top 20. Sophomore Ashley Hovda had rounds of 78 and 79 for a 157 and an 11th-place finish, while senior Becca Twiner was 17th with rounds of 75 and 84 (159). Freshman Erika Danford rounded out the Cats' lineup with a 168, good for 57th.

Western Carolina's two-day total of 610 is the fourth-best in school history. Longwood, who had back-to-back rounds of 311 for its total of 622, was followed by Elon (637), Winthrop (638) and Gardner-Webb (641).

After two events, WCU's record is 45-10. The Catamounts will return to action Oct. 3-5 in Lexington, Ky., at the University of Kentucky's Lady Wildcat Intercollegiate.
