Sunset Beach, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's golf team leads a field of 21 teams after day one of the Elon-Sea Trail Intercollegiate with a 297. The Lady Catamounts are 14 strokes ahead of their closest competitor, Longwood University, who has a 311 after day one.
Sophomore Brandy Andersen sits in first place after shooting a 71 on the par 72 course. Right behind her in second is WCU freshman Bianca Melone with a 73. Senior Becca Twiner is tied for sixth place with a 75 and sophomore Ashley Hovda is tied for 15th after carding a 78 in day one to round out Western's four counters. Freshman Erika Danford shot an 87 in the first round.
Western Carolina returns to the course Sunday to complete the tournament before heading back to Cullowhee.
