Sunset Beach, N.C. - Western Carolina posted a final round of 303 on Sunday to maintain its hold on third-place in the final standings of the Sea Trail Intercollegiate with a two-round total of 611. Senior Bianca Melone rallied from a 17th-place tie after the opening round to lead the Catamounts, posting a two-day total of 152 to stand in a two-way tie for ninth, her first top 10 of the season.

Western's 611 marked the 11th-best 36-hole score in school history. Also, dating back to last season, the Catamounts have now recorded eight-straight top five team finishes and have also finished in the top five as a team in 12 of its last 13 events dating back to the Southern Conference Championships in April of 2005.

Elon's Danielle Mills claimed individual medalist honors while her teammate, Taylor Johnson, finished second to lead the Elon, who led after the first round, to the team championship. The Phoenix finished with a final score of 596 (293-303) which was 14 strokes ahead of second-place Gardner-Webb at 610 (297-313). Western Carolina was third, followed by Mercer (309-315=624) and Radford rounding out the top five with a two-day total of 629 (311-318). Mills posted a 75 in the second round to finish with a two-day total of 145. Johnson also recorded a 75 on Sunday to finish one behind Mills with a 146.

Melone fired her lowest round of the season, 75, on Sunday to move eight places in the overall individual standings. Junior Malin Fryk also carded a 75 over the final 18 holes to jump 12 places from 23rd into a three-way tie for 11th-place with a two round total of 153, just one stroke in arrears of Melone.

Freshman Desiree Karlsson posted her best collegiate career finish in a four-way tie for 14th after shooting duplicate rounds of 77 for a total of 154. Junior Kandy Carland, who led Western after the first round, stumbled on Sunday firing an 81 to slip into a five-way tie for 24th (157), with the second Swedish freshman, Elin Mickelsson, rallying from an opening round 82 to shoot 76 on Sunday to move from 46th into a three-way tie for 29th with a 158.

 

 

Western will host the eighth-annual Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate this weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) at the Waynesville Country Club in Waynesville, N.C. Practice rounds tee off on Friday afternoon, with the opening ceremonies and tournament shotgun start scheduled for Saturday morning. The second and final round will tee off on Sunday morning.

Seven of the 14 teams which competed in the Sea Trail Intercollegiate - including the top six finishing teams - will be in action this weekend in Waynesville.
