Sunset Beach, N.C. - Junior Kandy Carland led Western Carolina with a four-over 76 in the opening round of the Sea Trail Intercollegiate on Saturday afternoon. The Catamounts, who won last year's team title as a part of three-consecutive individual and team titles to open the season, stand third after the opening round at the par 72, 5,947-yard course.

Host institution, Elon, had three players finish in the top-five to pace the Phoenix to a four-stroke lead over second-place Gardner-Webb after the first round of play. Western is third, 11 strokes in arrears of second with an opening round 308, but the Catamounts are locked in a tight race for the second runner-up spot. Mercer stands fourth just one stroke behind Western Carolina, with Radford in fifth (311) three strokes back and Appalachian State in sixth (312) four strokes behind.

Danielle Mills recorded a two-under-par 70 to lead the tournament while Taylor Johnson posted a 71 and sits in a tie for second with Gardner-Webb's Yayoi Garcia. Chelsea Benic of Kennesaw State posted an even 72 and sits in fourth place while Frederique Bruell of Elon notched a 73 and currently is tied for fifth with Katie Grahan of Gardner-Webb.

Carland stands 14th after the opening round, while freshman Desiree Karlsson and senior Bianca Melone each shot 77 on Saturday to stand tied for 17th. Seasonal leader, Malin Fryk, is 23rd with 18 holes to play after shooting 78, with freshman Elin Mickelsson rounding out Western's scorers with an opening round 82 to stand 46th.
