The Western Carolina women's golf team is off to a solid start in the first round of their first event of the season, shooting a 300 and standing in second place in the 17-team field at the Unlimited Potential/Baytree Classic. All five Catamounts broke 80, marking just the second time ever that Western had each of its players shoot in the 70's in the same round.
Junior Ashley Hovda led the Cats, firing a first-round 73 to stand in fourth place. Classmate Brandy Andersen was on her heels with a 74 (sixth place) through 18 holes. Freshman Kandy Carland (76), sophomore Bianca Melone (77) and freshman Lucinda Davies (78) rounded out Western's first-round scores.
UNC Wilmington is the leader after 18 holes, carding a 296. Trailing UNCW and WCU are East Tennessee State (302), Coastal Carolina (305), Southern Illinois (306) and the College of Charleston (306).
The teams will play 18 holes Saturday and finish up with 18 holes Sunday.
