Myrtle Beach, S.C. - After the first day of the Unlimited Potential/Bay Tree Classic in North Myrtle Beach, Western Carolina sits in ninth place out of 23 teams with a 314. The closest school to the event, Coastal Carolina, is leading the tournament. The Chanticleers fired a 296 among their top four players to take the lead in the event by 10 shots over second placed James Madison and Middle Tennessee State. The host school for the event, College of Charleston, sits in fourth place shooting 308.
Catamount sophomore Brandy Andersen finished the day in a tie for 17th after carding a 76. Ashley Hovda shot a 77 in round one to tie for 21st, while senior Becca Twiner shot an 80 for the day. Freshmen Bianca Melone and Erika Danford rounded out the squad with an 81 and 84, respectively.
The individual leader after day one of competition is Carol Green from James Madison. Green shot a blistering 71 to take a one shot lead over two Coastal Carolina players in Danielle Renner and Natalie Cruse.
The shot of the day came from Mercer's Ashley Harris who aced the 147 yard par 3 eighth hole during the morning round. The hole-in-one is the only one of the tournament so far and Harris shot an even par 36 on her front nine finishing with a 76.
Saturday, there will be another double shotgun start at 8 am and 1 pm. The teams that went off in the morning Friday will tee off at 1 pm tomorrow and the team's that played in the afternoon Friday will start off the day. Heading into Saturday, team two and team 13 are separated by just 10 shots.
