Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's golf team sits in a tie for 12th place after the first round of the NCAA East Regional at the Salem Glen Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Catamounts combined to shoot a 306 (+22) in round one to put them ahead of Wake Forest (307), UNC Wilmington (307), Furman (307), Tulane (309), South Florida (312), Mississippi (322) and St. Francis-Pa. (335).
Freshman Brandy Andersen and sophomore Line Cordes are leading the way for the Cats after each shot a 75 in the first on the par-71 course. Sophomore Johanna Lundberg came in at six over with a 77, while freshman Ashley Hovda shot a 79 and Rebecca Twiner withdrew after nine holes after becoming ill. She is still expected to play for the Cats in round two.
Duke, the number one team in the country, sits alone in first place with a 288. Kristy McPherson of South Carolina leads the field individually after carding a 68 for the day.
Round two of the East Regional continues on Friday with Western Carolina teeing off at 7:30 am. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship.
