Greensboro, N.C. - Western Carolina carded a three-day total of 936 to place second at the 2004 Southern Conference Championships Sunday afternoon at Starmount Forest Country Club. The Catamounts were led by Ashley Hovda (226) and Becca Twiner (235), who placed fifth and eighth, respectively. Freshman Bianca Melone (238) tied for 11th and Brandy Andersen (239) tied for 13th.

The team's score of 936 is the seventh lowest three-round score in Catamount history, while Hovda's three-day total of 226 ties her lowest three-round score (eigth all-time) and ranks as the third lowest individual WCU score at a SoCon championship. Twiner improved her lowest SoCon championship score by one stroke, now with the seventh all-time lowest championship scorecard.

Twiner ends her Catamount career holding the third lowest single-round score (69), tied for the seventh lowest two-round score (149) and claiming the third lowest three-round score in WCU history (218). She also finishes with the fifth lowest single-season stroke average in WCU history, which was 77.65 for the 2003-04 season, and currently has the fourth lowest career average at 78.67 strokes per round. Twiner played in 39 events and a total of 95 rounds with a career low round of 69, which she has accomplished twice.

Also wrapping up her career is Meredith Beck. Beck shot a career-low 74 in the second round of the 2002 Lady Highlander Invitational. She owns the 10th lowest WCU career stroke average at 87.52 strokes after 25 rounds of play. Beck has also been a three-year Student-Athlete Advisory Committee member.

Also announced at the championships, Twiner and Andersen were named to the All-Southern Conference first team, while Hovda was named second team. Hovda additionally made the All-Tournament team by virtue of her fifth place finish.
