Cullowhee, N.C. - For the second-consecutive day, Western Carolina junior Ashley Hovda braved the elements to card the best individual round at the 2005 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship as she turned in a 73 to finish second overall in the tournament.
Led by Hovda's performance, the Catamounts advanced another position to finish in fourth, firing Sunday's best round of 306 in the final round for a three-day total of 941, which is Western's fourth-best showing at the conference tournament and ranks tied for 11th on the WCU all-time best round list.
Also on Sunday, the All-Southern Conference women's golf teams were released with Hovda earning second team all-conference honors for the second season.
Hovda charged from being tied for 15th after the first 18 holes to stand tied for second at the conclusion of Saturday's round. The Springfield, Ohio, native continued her masterful work of the 5,984-yard Furman University Golf Course Sunday to claim sole possession of second, just three strokes back of individual medalist Jenny Suh of Furman, who was also tabbed the conference's golfer of the year.
For Hovda, the three-day count of 223 ranks as the second-best Southern Conference individual performance in Western Carolina history, surpassing her previous SoCon best of 226 shot a year ago when she finished fifth. The second place finish was the second highest for a WCU individual all-time.
Sophomore Bianca Melone again improved her play on the final day. She moved from tied for 24th on the first day, to 15th on Saturday to finish tenth with a final round 75. Melone carded 233 over the three days, her lowest tournament score since turning in a 231 at the Lady Pirate Fall Invitational back in mid-October.
Rounding out Western's side for the tournament were junior Brandy Andersen and freshman Kandy Carland. Each improved their scores on the final day with Andersen firing a 78 to finish tied for 16th and Carland shooting an even 80, tied for 29th, up six positions from Saturday. Carland's classmate, Lucinda Davies, withdrew entering the final day of competition.
Furman, which led from start to finish over the three days, captured its record 11th title in the history of the 12-year tournament. The Paladins finished with a team 904 to win by 33 strokes over second place Elon to obtain the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The College of Charleston just edged the Catamounts by one stroke for third, with East Tennessee State slipping to fifth in the final standings with a total of 946.
