Greensboro, N.C. - Defending Southern Conference champion Western Carolina continued its hold on second place Saturday in the 2004 SoCon women's golf championship. The Catamounts fired a 315 in the second round under windy conditions for a two-day total of 619 and inched further away from the rest of the field. Furman still leads the pack after carding a 308 for the day to bring its two-day total to 605.

Ashley Hovda moved into the lead for the Catamounts as she shot a 74 for the second round to bring her total to 150. Hovda is now in third place and just four strokes off the lead. Tied for seventh is Bianca Melone with a 155 and right behind her is Brandy Andersen with a 156 to tie for ninth. Becca Twiner is tied for 14th with a 160, while Erika Danford is in 30th place with a 167.

Furman teammates Sarah Johnston and Jenny Suh are tied atop the individual leaderboard with a two-day total of 146 (+4). Suh fired the lowest round of the day at two-over-par 73 while Johnston used consecutive birdies on the 14th and 15th holes to card a four-over-par 75. Elon skipped up to third place, now with a 635. The host school, UNC Greensboro is fourth at 637. College of Charleston is fifth at 640, followed by East Tennessee State (645) in sixth, and Appalachian State (680) in seventh. The Citadel (691) and Wofford (693) round out the field.

The final round will begin on Sunday, April 25, at 8:15 am.
