Greenville, S.C. - Western Carolina junior Ashley Hovda fired the lowest round of the day at the 2005 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship helping the Catamounts advance one spot to stand in fifth entering Sunday. Hovda's 71 on Saturday advanced her 13 spots from her first round position to currently stand tied for second entering the tournament's final round.

As a team, Western turned in the second-best round of the day, carding a 312, 11 strokes improved over its opening round 323. Furman, who leads the tournament, was the only squad to shoot better, finishing with a 299 to lead second place Elon by 24 strokes. The College of Charleston, East Tennessee State, and Western round out the top five with the Cats standing 38 strokes behind the Paladins.

Weather again was a factor on the second day from the 5,984-yard Furman University Golf Course. Thunderstorms and rain from Friday changed to cold temperatures and otherwise blustery conditions Saturday.

After carding a tournament-low 68 on Friday, leader Jenny Suh of Furman could only manage a 77 on Saturday through the conditions. Despite the fall off, Suh remains the tournament's leader entering the final day with a two-round 145, five strokes ahead of the three-way tie containing Hovda and Furman's Theresa Paik and Sarah Strum.

Sophomore Bianca Melone gained nine positions on the second day, jumping from 24th to stand alone in 15th after shooting a 77 on Saturday for a two-round total of 158. Brandy Andersen, who claimed the individual tournament title in 2003, continued her consistent play, firing an 81 on the day to accompany her opening 80 for a 161 heading into the final round in a five-way tie for 20th, two spots improved.

WCU's freshman tandem of Lucinda Davies and Kandy Carland had troubles with the conditions scoring 89 and 83, respectively. Carland gained six positions, moving into sole possession of 35th, while Davies slipped into a two-way tie for 36th at 172 overall.

Western will be among the second group to tee of on Sunday's final round. The Catamounts will be joined by golfers from East Tennessee State and UNC Greensboro in the second pairing that will take the course about 9:30 am.
