Greensboro, N.C. - Defending Southern Conference champion Western Carolina stands in second place overall in the 2004 SoCon Championship after day one. The Catamounts carded a 304 for the first round, just seven shots off first place Furman (297). WCU finished the day 11 strokes ahead of tournament host UNC Greensboro in third place.
Last year's individual medalist, Brandy Andersen, leads the way for the Cats in a tie for fourth place after shooting a 74 in the opening round on the par 71- 6,162 yard Starmount Country Club course. Right behind Andersen is WCU's Ashley Hovda who is in sixth with a 76. Tied for seventh are Catamounts Becca Twiner and Bianca Melone, each firing a 77 for the day. Rounding out Western's team is Erika Danford who is tied for 32nd with an 86.
Following UNCG is College of Charleston in fourth at 319. Elon and East Tennessee State are tied for fifth at 320. Rounding out the field after the first round are Appalachian State (340), The Citadel (341) and Wofford (346). Sarah Johnston of Furman tops the individual leaderboard after 18 holes by firing an even-par 71.
