Waynesville, N.C. - The Western Carolina Catamounts held on to beat nine-time defending champion Furman to take home the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship trophy for the first time Tuesday, April 22, at the Waynesville Country Club.

The Catamounts shot a 303 in the third round to finish the tournament with a score of 894, which is a SoCon three-round tournament team record. In last year's championship, Western placed sixth, shooting a 964, improving its score by 70 strokes in one year's time. With the win, the Catamounts received the automatic bid to compete in the 2003 NCAA Regional Tournament .

Western Carolina freshman Brandy Andersen was the only golfer to shoot under par for the tournament with a 212, earning the individual championship trophy. Her three-round total set a WCU record by six strokes and the SoCon Tournament record by two. She shot par or better in each of the three rounds and was named the SoCon's Freshman of the Year as well as earning all-league honors. Joining Andersen on the all-league team are sophomore Line Cordes and junior Rebecca Twiner. Also taking home hardware for the Catamounts is head coach Steve Lott, who was named the SoCon Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Runner-up Furman placed two in the top five and finished with a three-day total of 900. Individual runner-up, Brandi Jackson, was named the SoCon Player of the Year after shooting a 217, as well as earning all-league honors. Senior Leigh Turner finished third with a 221 and was also named to the all-league team.

Finishing out the field, UNC Greensboro carded a 303 in the third round to overtake the College of Charleston for third place with a three-day total of 917. The Cougars finished with a 921 for fourth, followed by East Tennessee State with a 944, Appalachian State with a 955, The Citadel with a 982 and Wofford shooting a 992. This was The Citadel's first year in the women's tournament.

 

 

Additional players named to the all-league team are Sapna Patel and Jennifer Bridwell from College of Charleston and Jenny Gleason from UNC Greensboro.
