Mebane, N.C. - Led by junior Bianca Melone's one-under, 71, on Friday, Western Carolina stands in second place after the first round of the 2006 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship from the par 72, 5,715-yard Mill Creek Golf and Country Club. WCU carded an opening team round of 295, which is tied for the 11th-best in school history and the second-best all-time at the SoCon Championships.

The College of Charleston holds a one-stroke advantage over Western after 18 of the scheduled 54 holes, combining for a 294. UNC Greensboro was the only other school to break the 300 barrier on Friday, shooting 299 to stand six strokes off the lead in third, followed by 11-time champion, Furman, at 308 and Elon in fifth with an opening round of 318.

Charleston senior Angie Hill birdied the final hole to take sole possession atop the individual leader board, carding a two-under, 70, to lead Western's Melone by a stroke in second as only two scored below par. UNCG's Ashley Mylton shot even par to stand alone in third, followed by senior Ashley Hovda in fourth, three strokes in arrears with a 73.

All five of Western's golfers posted rounds in the top 10 on Friday. Following Melone and Hovda, sophomore Malin Fryk is tied for sixth with 36 holes to play after firing a three-over 75. Senior Brandy Andersen and the Catamounts' most recent winner, sophomore Kandy Carland, are tied for 10th, both shooting 76.

After making the turn at one under, scoring a birdie on number two and the rest par, Melone moved to two-under with a birdie at the par 5, 557-yard fifth hole. She bogeyed the next hole, but rallied with her third birdie of the opening round on number 14 to again dip two strokes under par. The Orlando, Fla., native closed her round with a bogey on the 17th and went to the clubhouse as the early leader.

Hovda, who was the final Catamount to take to the links on Friday morning, made the turn at even par, matching her three bogies with three birdies over the opening nine holes. After shooting one over through the first two holes, Hovda birdied the next three holes to stand at two-under stepping into the seventh tee box. Yet, bogies on two of the final three left her even headed to the back nine. With one bogey over the final nine holes, the Springfield, Ohio, native took to the clubhouse in fourth place.

The Swedish-born Fryk birdied the second hole in her opening round and completed the front nine at one under, tied with Melone atop the leader board. However, a double bogey on number 13, followed by bogies on number 15 and 17 dropped her into a tie for sixth with a three-over, 75.

Andersen and Carland both had eventful front nines en route to their final scores from the first day. Andersen countered four bogies with a pair of birdies on both of the par 3 holes on the front nine to turn at two over, then double bogeyed number 10, adding a bogey and a birdie to duplicate her 38 on the back to shoot 76. Carland overcame a double bogey and back-to-back bogeys on the first three holes, adding a birdie before turning to shoot three over. She rallied to shoot one over par, 33, on the back.

Action continues at 11:00 am on Saturday morning at Mill Creek. Fans can follow all of the action from Mill Creek with Live Leader boards at www.golfstatresults.com, with individual scores updated after every nine holes.
