Waynesville, N.C. - The Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship got underway Sunday morning, April 20, at the Waynesville Country Club in Waynesville, N.C. Western Carolina leads the eight-team field after the first round with a 298 on the 5,900-yard course. Defending champion Furman and the College of Charleston are battling it out behind the Catamounts, as the Paladins shot a 304 for second and the Cougars carded a 305 for third place.
WCU freshman Brandy Andersen and Charleston senior Jennifer Bridwell are tied for first after day one, each shooting a 71 for one under par. Andersen finished the front nine with a field-low 33, while Bridwell claimed the best back nine score of 35. Bridwell finished ninth overall in last year's championship and earned All-SoCon honors for her season performance.
Furman and Western Carolina both have four out of their five players in the field's top 20, with Appalachian State, Charleston and UNC Greensboro each boasting three players in the top 20.
Action continues Monday, April 21, with the first tee time at 8:56 am.
