Mt. Pleasant, S.C. - Paced by three players in the top 10, Western Carolina stands in second place, five strokes in arrears of first-round leading College of Charleston, after the first round of 2007 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship at the Patriot's Point Golf Links. Freshman Desiree Karlsson leads the trio of Catamounts in the top 10, currently in a two-way tie for second place just two strokes off the pace.
Inclement weather, including gale force winds and the impending threat of thunderstorms, forced the cancellation of Sunday's opening round, reducing the scheduled 54-hole tournament to just two rounds. It is the third time since 2001 that the three-round event has been shortened to 36 holes. The second - and final - round is set to tee off at 7:30 am on Tuesday morning.
With a team 307 on Monday, the College of Charleston leads Western Carolina, which tied the seventh-lowest team round in school history with a 312. Furman stands two strokes back of the Catamounts at 314 in third place, followed by UNC Greensboro (317) and Elon (322) rounding out the top five.
College of Charleston's Megan Miller leads the field after shooting a 74 on the day. Miller's Cougar teammate, Steffi Kirchmayr, is tied with Western's Karlsson for second after carding 76 on Monday as the golfers continued to battle wind gusts up to 40 mph.
Karlsson shot a team-low 35 on the front nine before carding 41 on the back for the first round total of 76. Joining the rookie in the top 10 were juniors Kandy Carland and Malin Fryk, who stand tied for fourth and ninth, respectively. Fryk, who led WCU in scoring average this season, was the only Catamount to shoot in the 30s on the back nine on Monday. Last year, the two tied each other for fifth place, marking their best-ever performances at the conference event.
Rounding out Western's scorers were senior Bianca Melone, who finished as the tournament runner-up a year ago, in a three-way tie for 15th after firing 80, and freshman Elin Mickelsson in a four-way deadlock for 21st, at 82.
Statistically speaking, Western leads the tournament in par 4 scoring, averaging 4.30 on the mid-range holes, while ranking tied for second with five birdies and a combined 50 pars on the day.
The final round tees off at 7:30 am, with WCU's first golfer, Mickelsson, taking the course at 8:55 am and Karlsson teeing off at 9:31 am with first round leader, Miller.
