Hilton Head Island, S.C. - Playing in windy conditions on Sunday morning, Western Carolina fired an opening-round score of 375 and sits ninth after 18 holes at the 2018 SoCon Women's Golf Championship on the par-72, 6,105-yard South Course at the Moss Creek Golf Club.

Catamount seniors Amanda Floberg and Alyssa Morahan pace the Catamount scoring five, sitting in a tie for 35th and 40th-place, respectively, after the first round. Paired with golfers from The Citadel and Wofford, WCU's scoring five is scheduled to tee off on hole No. 1 beginning at 8:00 am on Monday morning.

Opening on the back nine, Floberg carded a pair of birdies -- one on both the front and back nine on Sunday -- to lead the Catamounts. She played the first nine holes at 4-over par before struggling through the second nine on the front in shooting 89 on the day. Morahan made the turn at 5-over par from the back nine with five bogeys and four pars. However, she, too, struggled on the front nine in shooting 93 to sit 40th overall.

Rounding out WCU's scoring five were freshman Maya White in 41st with a first-round score of 94 and sophomore Brianna Plummer in 43rd at 99. Plummer charted a birdie on the par-4 16th on the opening nine holes. Freshman Hazel Martin withdrew 14 holes into her first round of competition, not turning in a score for the team on Sunday.

Three-time reigning champion Furman posted a 13-over-par 301 to take a six-stroke lead into day two of competition. Mercer's Payton Schanen had the best individual score of the day, shooting a 1-over-par 73 as the Bears sit six strokes back of the Paladins after round one.

Furman claims the next three spots on the individual leaderboard as Natalie Srinivasan, the 2017 SoCon Champion, shot a 2-over-par 74 to claim sole possession of second place. The Paladins' Reona Hirai and Jacqueline Bendrick each turned in a 75, tying for third place.

As a team, Chattanooga sits third with a 20-over-308, while Samford is fourth shooting a 31-over-par 319, followed by ETSU's 35-over-par 323. The leaderboard features a four-way tie for sixth place and a five-way tie for 10th place. UNCG (+38), Wofford (+42), The Citadel (+61) and WCU (+87) round out the field.

Live stats can be found through and will be updated throughout Monday's second round. The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA regionals.
