Hilton Head, S.C. - Western Carolina freshman Olivia Landino carded an opening round five-over par, 77, on Sunday to sit in a three-way tie for seventh-place overall at the 2014 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship at the par-72, 5,941-yard North Course of the Moss Creek Golf Club. Landino led the Catamounts to a fifth-place standing with two rounds remaining.
The second round gets underway on Monday morning with tee times at 8:00 am with 10-minute increments. Paired with golfers from Elon and Wofford, WCU's scoring five is scheduled to tee off on the front nine between 8:50 and 9:30 am.
Landino countered a bogey on the par-4 second with the lone birdie of her first round on the par-4 third to stand even through the first five holes of her round. However, she closed the front nine with a double-bogey and a bogey on the two par fives to make the turn at three-over.
The Hermitage, Pa., product carded pars on seven of the nine holes on the back nine for the five-over par, 77. Landino is tied for fourth in the tournament with 12 pars.
Sophomore Mariah Hopkins charted seven bogies and two double-bogies with one birdie on the first day for a 10-over par, 82. The Greensboro, N.C., native is tied with five others for 22nd overall. Hopkins made the turn at six-over par and turned in bogies on the first two holes of the back nine. However, she settled to score par on six-straight holes before a bogey on the par-4 18th.
Allison birdied the par-4 second to move to one-under par through three holes before a tough, five-over par on No. 4 left her at four-over for the round. She made the turn at five-over par before charting four bogies and a double-bogey on the back nine. Mitchell was just one-over par through the first six holes of her round, finishing with eight bogies and a double-bogey over the final 12 holes.
In her first SoCon Championship appearance, Thompson had a busy front nine with three double bogies, two bogies and a triple bogey against two pars and a birdie. She recovered on the back nine to post five pars against four bogies.
With four golfers inside the individual top 10, Furman leads the nine-team field by seven strokes over a two-way tie for the runner-up position between Samford and Chattanooga. The Paladins fired a first-round 305 as a team with the Bulldogs and Mocs shooting 312. Elon is 13 strokes off the pace in fourth place at 318 with the Catamounts rounding out the top five teams at 325.
Chattanooga's Emily McLennan posted the best opening round score on Sunday with a one-over par, 73, to lead the 45-golfer field by a stroke. Samford's Natalie Mitchell holds the runner-up position a stroke back at 74 with Valentina Romero of Furman in third, two strokes in arrears with a three-over par, 75.
