Stockbridge, Ga. - Western Carolina freshman Desiree Karlsson shot an opening round 75 to lead the Catamount women's golf team to 14th after the first of two rounds at the John Kirk / Lady Panther Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia State at the 6,009-yard Eagle's Landing Country Club. Karlsson is in the clubhouse tied for 19th, just four strokes out of the top 10 while WCU finished with an opening day 311 to stand seven strokes in arrears of the top 10.

Maryland is the first round leader after shooting a five-under, 283, as a team on Monday. The Terrapins hold an eight-stroke lead over second place East Carolina (291), followed by Louisville (295) in third. Birmingham-Southern (297) and Memphis (300) round out the top five.

Individually, Stacey Tate of Memphis and Manuela Tarazona of Jacksonville State each shot four-under 68 over the opening 18 holes to stand tied atop the leader board. Tate shot 32 on the front nine before battling through a 36 on the back, while Tarazona fired 33 and 35.

Karlsson ranked sixth in par four scoring, shooting even par on mid-range holes with a combined 13 pars on the day to lead the Catamounts. The Ljunghusen, Sweden, native who entered the tournament second on Western's squad in scoring this season posted 37 on the front nine and 38 on the back for her opening round 75. Countryman, junior Malin Fryk, shot 77 on Monday (37-40) to stand tied for 41st while lone senior Bianca Melone rallied from a 42 on the front nine with 37 over the final nine holes to stand tied fro 54th.

Rounding out WCU's performers from Monday were junior Kandy Carland tied for 66th (80) and freshman Elin Mickelsson tied for 77th (82).

 

 

Final round action from the John Kirk/Lady Panther Invitational is scheduled for Tuesday with a shotgun start at 9:00 am.
