Glen Allen, Va. - The Western Carolina women's golf team is in fifth place after the opening round of the Lady Spider Invitational, hosted by the University of Richmond. The Catamounts carded a 310 for the day, four strokes ahead of N.C. State in sixth place and 21 strokes ahead of SoCon foe The Citadel, which is tied for 10th.
Senior Becca Twiner continues to shine on the links this spring as she leads the Cats after firing a 76 in the first round on the par-72 Hunting Hawk Golf Course, tying for 10th. Also among the tournament's leaders is sophomore Ashley Hovda in a tie for 17th with a 77.
Rounding out the Catamount team is sophomore Brandy Andersen with a 78 (tied for 22nd), freshman Bianca Melone with a 79 (tied for 25th) and sophomore Erika Danford with an 86 (tied for 58th).
The second round of the tournament continues on Saturday, as the teams tee off at 6:52 am, with the final round concluding the event on Sunday.
