UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational - Round 1 and 2 Results

Cullowhee, N.C. - Seeking its eighth top five finish of the season, the Western Carolina women's golf team shot 308 through the first 18 holes and followed it up with the best round of the day, 292, to stand with a two-round total of 600 to hold a three-stroke lead on the team leaderboard after two of the three rounds of the UNC Wilmington Lady Seahawk Invitational at the par 72, 6,043-yard River Landing Golf Club.

Western, which moved from seventh after the first round to leading in the clubhouse at the conclusion of the first day, is in familiar territory atop the leaderboard. The Catamounts opened the 2005-06 season by winning three-straight tournaments and claiming three individual medalist honors. WCU erased a 10-stroke deficit after the opening round to pull out to the lead by three strokes over Maryland in second (603) and Birmingham Southern and host UNC Wilmington by five shots, each carding 605. East Tennessee State rounds out the top five, 10-strokes back after shooting 610.

Emily Klein of Birmingham Southern built a one-stroke advantage in the individual standings, shooting rounds of 71 and 74 for a 145, and a one-stroke advantage over UNC Wilmington's Michelle Jarman and Beth Kelts of Kentucky, each with two round totals of 145. WCU senior Ashley Hovda carded identical rounds of 74 to stand three strokes in arrears with a 148, entering the final round in fifth place.

Sophomore Malin Fryk, who was one of just two players to record eagles on Monday, is currently tied for 10th after shooting back-to-back scores of 75 (150). Junior Bianca Melone is tied for 15th, recovering from an opening round score of 81 to be the only player to break par on the day, slicing 10 strokes off her first round score to card a 71. Rounding out the Western's scorers, sophomore Kandy Carland shot 155 to stand tied for 22nd, while senior Brandy Andersen bounced back from an opening 85 to shoot par in the second round to stand with a two-round total of 157, tied for 33rd.

As a team, the Catamounts lead the field in par 3 scoring, while ranking second in both par 4 and 5 shooting. WCU also tallied the most birdies on the day with 19. Carland is tied for the tournament lead in par 3 scoring at 2.88, while Melone stands even-par on the course's shortest holes. Hovda is tied for third with 27 pars through two rounds, while Fryk and Melone are also tied for third with six birdies apiece.

The third and final round is set for Tuesday with tee times begin at 8:30 am.
