Cullowhee, N.C. - Junior Ashley Hovda recovered from her 81 in the first round to shoot a team-low 72 in the second and 77 in the final round for a three-round total of 230 as the Western Carolina women's golf team rallied from eighth to a third-place showing at the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate in Citrus Springs, Fla.

At the same tournament one year ago, the Catamounts moved from fifth after the first day to capture the tournament title. Western duplicated the number of positions gained this season, advancing from eighth to third, a mere three shots out of second place. Coastal Carolina won the tournament with a total of 908, followed by the host Marshall Thundering Herd at 946.

Hovda, whose second-round even-par score (72) tied for the second-lowest round shot by any golfer in the tournament at the 5,952-yard course, led the Catamount scoring with her fourth top ten finish of the season. Western's first round leader, freshman Kandy Carland finished with rounds of 79 and 81 to finish with the second-lowest score of her career in a three-round tournament (238). Carland tied teammate Bianca Melone, who fired rounds of 79-80-79 for the same final score, in 18th place in the field.

Junior Brandy Andersen, in her first event back following a hand injury, improved with each round following her 85 on Monday. Andersen finished off the tournament carding 80 and 78 to bring home a count of 243, good enough for 33rd place.

Rounding out WCU's competitors at the event was freshman Lucinda Davies, who made the most improvement from an opening 94 to a final day tally of 81 for a three-round mark of 257.

Western Carolina returns to the links April 9-10 when it travels to the Bonnie Hoover Invitational, hosted by James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. The event will be the final tune-up for the Cats before competing in the Southern Conference Championship in Greenville, S.C. at the end of April.
