Cullowhee, N.C. - After weather permitted only one complete round on the first day of the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate, the Western Carolina women's golf team stands in eighth place in the 17-team field with a team 323 at El Diablo Golf and Country Club in Citrus Springs, Fla.

The second round had begun on Monday afternoon when inclement weather hit the area forcing the postponement after only three holes played. That second round will be completed, followed by the third and final round on Tuesday afternoon, but thunderstorms are again in the forecast for central Florida.

WCU was led by freshman Kandy Carland, who fired a first round 78 to stand in a seven-way tie for 12th place in the overall individual standings. Carland's opening round was four strokes better than her season average and a mere three strokes shy of tying her career-best.

Sophomore Bianca Melone turned in a first round 79 to stand tied for 19th with seven other golfers, while junior Ashley Hovda recorded the Cats' best nine-hole score of 37 to open play. Yet, she slipped on the back, carding a 44 to drop her into a tie for 30th with an 81, five strokes off her seasonal average.

In her first competition back after injuring her hand, junior Brandy Anderson carded an 85 to stand tied for 50th entering Tuesday's rounds, with freshman Lucinda Davies tallying a 94 after one to round out Western's scorers.

Results from the second and third rounds from the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate will be available later this evening.
