Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate - Round Two Scores/Standings
Cullowhee, N.C. - After completing the first 18 of 54 scheduled holes at the Marshall Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate tied for fourth place, the Western Carolina women's golf team slipped to fifth with one round remaining with a two-round team score of 636. Round two will commence on Tuesday morning at the par 72, 5,942-yard El Diablo Golf and Country Club in Citrus Springs, Fla.
The University of Maryland is the leader after two rounds (606), carding team scores of 306 and 300 with the latter marking the lowest team score in the tournament. Florida Atlantic, which led after 18, is second with a two-round total of 616, followed by Missouri State (629), North Texas (635), and Western (636) rounding out the top five. Eastern Kentucky and Wichita State are the closest teams to catching Western, standing in sixth and seventh, respectively, with scores of 644 and 646.
Individually, FAU holds two of the top spots as June Bolme carded an opening round 78 but recovered with a two-under, 70, for a 148 to lead by four strokes over teammate Praewnapa Phol-Uayporn, who is tied with Maryland's Kelly Calkin for second, each with a 36-hole score of 151.
Sophomore Kandy Carland continues to pace the Catamounts after the conclusion of the second round. The Hendersonville, N.C., native fired rounds of 76 and 79 to be in the clubhouse at 155 with 18 holes remaining and amidst a four-way tie for eighth after finishing round one tied for fourth. Senior teammate, Ashley Hovda, recovered from an opening 79 to shoot 77 on the afternoon to stand one stroke behind Carland alone in 12th. Hovda ranks tied for second on par 3 scoring, shooting even par over the first two rounds while Carland fired even par on the par 5 holes. Hovda also ranks tied for fourth in birdies with five.
Another sophomore, Swedish-born
Malin Fryk, is tied for 21st for WCU after turning in rounds of 81 and 78 for a 159, just four strokes off the top ten. Fryk is tied with classmate, Carland, with 22 pars which ranks tied for fourth among all competition. Junior
Bianca Melone finished Monday tied for 38th after carding identical scores of 83 (166), and senior
Brandy Andersen struggled through rounds of 87 and 88 (175) to stand tied for 65th entering the final round.
Western will attempt to make it seven Top Five team finishes in eight seasonal events on Tuesday as it concludes play at the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate. WCU has finished as the tournament champion and in third place each of the past two seasons, respectively.
