Tega Cay, S.C. - The Elon University women's golf team fired a final round of 316 to overtake Western Carolina and win the first annual Shamrock Invitational, which was played on the 5,842-yard Tega Cay Golf Club layout this weekend.
Soggy conditions made it a tough course, but four Lady Catamounts finished out the tournament in the top 20. Sophomore Line Cordes led the team with a 245 to tie for fifth overall. Ashley Hovda rounded out the Cats with a 257 to end in a tie for 22nd.
The Phoenix had five players finish in the top 20 of the 54-hole tournament as they stormed to the victory. Katie Knoepffler fired a 74 to lead Elon. Elon led after the first round on Friday and slipped to second on Saturday behind Western Carolina.
Knoepffler's final round score was the lowest individual round of the tournament and placed her second among the leaders with a three-day total of 241.
Ferris State's Kathryn Bobbie took tourney medalist honors with a total of 234 (79-79-76) as she was the only player in the field to shoot below 80 in every round.
The Lady Cats return to action April 4-6 at the LSU-Cleveland Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La.
