Citrus Springs, Fla. - The Western Carolina women's golf team sits in fifth place at the Lady Herd-El Diablo Intercollegiate after firing a 314 in the opening round of action Monday. Senior Becca Twiner is tied for sixth overall and leads the way for the Catamounts as she shot a 75 in the first round.
Thirty-six holes were scheduled Monday, but play was suspended during the second 18 holes of play around 6:00 pm due to lightning in the area. Teams will conclude their Monday rounds early Tuesday before final rounds commence later in the day.
Tied for 12th is sophomore Brandy Andersen with a 77, while freshman Bianca Melone is tied for 26th after shooting an 80. Rounding out the Catamount lineup is Ashley Hovda with an 82 (T45th) and Erika Danford with an 87 (T67th).
Yale leads the tournament after the first round with a team score of 308. Kentucky's JV team is second, with a 310. Although the results attached to the release do not show the Wildcats in second place, UK currently holds the second position because the GolfStat program only recognizes varsity teams.
