The Western Carolina women's golf team trimmed 18 strokes off its second round score on Monday to advance three places to 12th at the Pinehurst Challenge, hosted by the College of Charleston at par 72, 5796-yard Pinehurst No. 8. The Catamounts enter Tuesday's final round just four strokes outside of the top 10 at the tournament with a two-day total of 636.
Sophomore Desiree Karlsson leads WCU with a two-round score of 156 (83-73), slicing 10 strokes off her opening round score during Monday's second round to stand tied for 23rd. Her classmate countryman, Elin Mickelsson, slipped into a tie for 35th, two strokes in arrears at 158 (76-82).
Freshmen Josefine Sundh and Katja Dammann each shot better on the tournament's second day as Sundh shot 76 and Dammann 78 to stand tied for 44th (160) and 61st (162), respectively.
Western's fifth player, senior Kandy Carland, withdrew from competition on Monday.
First-round leader, East Tennessee, continues to pace the field with a four-stroke advantage over East Carolina, 611-to-615. SoCon foes, UNC Greensboro and Chattanooga, stand tied for third with two-round scores of 620, with a two-way tie for fifth rounding out the top five scoring schools as August State and Oregon State each carded team rounds of 624 entering the final round.
Individually, College of Charleston's Steffi Kirchmayr and ETSU's Laura Jansone lead the way, each with a four-over 148 to stand tied atop the leader board. Chattanooga's Emma deGroot, ECU's Emelie Lind and Lucy Gould from East Tennessee are tied for the third position, all just one stroke back at 149.
The third and final round will be played on Tuesday morning.
