Western Carolina stands in a three-way tie for 15th-place at the Pinehurst Challenge, hosted by the College of Charleston at par 72, 5796-yard Pinehurst No. 8. The Catamounts were led by sophomore Elin Mickelsson who carded a four-over 76 on Sunday to stand in a six-way tie for eighth place.
East Tennessee State leads in-state rival, Chattanooga, by four strokes 307-to-311 after the first round. UNC Greensboro and East Carolina are tied for third after carding 313, with Boise State rounding out the top five at 314, seven strokes off the lead.
Western shot an opening round 327 to stand in a three-way tie with Stetson and James Madison in 15th. Mickelsson fired 42 on the front nine, bouncing back with a 34 on the back to finish at 76. Her classmate, Desiree Karlsson, stands tied for 65th (83) followed by freshmen Josefine Sundh and Katja Dammann tied for 80th with an opening round 84. Senior Kandy Carland rounded out Western's scorers in a tie for 96th with an opening round 86.
