Final Rounds of Lady Jaguar Invitational

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Women's Golf Team completed their first tournament of the spring with a third place finish at the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational played at the par 72, Azalea City Golf Course. The Catamounts fired a 297 in round two, improving ten strokes over their first round total.

Middle Tennessee fired a second round 295 to edge the host South Alabama Lady Jaguars by three strokes to claim medalist honors. Western was twelve strokes out of first, with Lamar (614) and Florida Atlantic (615) rounding out the top five.

Junior Bianca Melone was the low scorer for Western, carding rounds of 77 and 73 to stand tied for ninth-place overall, marking her first top ten finish of the year. Two strokes behind Melone was sophomore Malin Fryk with rounds of 77 and 75 for a two-round total of 152.

Senior Brandy Andersen made the biggest improvement on day two, rallying rallied back from an opening round 80 to fire an even par 72 in the final round. Fryk and Andersen have both recorded five, top twenty showings this year. Senior Ashley Hovda finished with a 77 on day two, just missing the top twenty to finish tied for twenty-first with a total of 153. Rounding out WCU's scoring was sophomore Kandy Carland, who carded a 78 in the final round to finish tied for twenty-eighth (155).

Western's third-place finish at the Lady Jaguar Invitational marks the sixth time in seven tournaments that the Catamounts have finished in the top five this season. It was also the fourth, top three finish for WCU this year.

The Catamounts return to action on March 20-21 in Citrus Springs, Fla., for the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate. Two years ago, WCU finished as medalists at El Diabo, garnering a third place showing last year at the same event.
