Opening Round Results
Cullowhee, N.C. - In their first competition of the spring season, the Western Carolina women's golf team concluded day one tied for fifth with a team score of 307 at the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational at the par 72, 5,821-yard Azalea City Golf Course. Western showed progress over the back nine, shooing two over on the final nine holes as a team.
The host Lady Jaguars stand tied with Middle Tennessee State atop the leader boards with identical opening rounds of 297, with Lamar standing third with 303, followed by Southern Mississippi in fourth with 306 and Western tied with Florida Atlantic in fifth, each with 307.
Individually, senior Ashley Hovda led the way for WCU over the opening 18 holes, shooting 39 and 37 to card a 76 to stand tied for 19th after the first day. A trio of Catamounts entered Tuesday's round tied for 28th as sophomore Malin Fryk, junior Bianca Melone, and sophomore Kandy Carland each recorded 77, with senior Brandy Anderson shooting 80 with twin scores of 40 on Monday to stand tied for 52nd.
In its seventh event of the 2005-06 season, Western is looking for its sixth top five finish as the Catamounts won three team championships in the fall and finished inside the top 10 a total five times.
