The Western Carolina women's golf team shot an opening round of 336 to stand in 18th place with 36 holes to play at the Pinehurst Challenge at the 6,009-yard Pinehurst #8 in Pinehurst, N.C. The event is the first of the spring season for head coach Steve Lott and his squad.
The Catamounts, without two-time All-Southern Conference performer Brandy Andersen due to a hand injury, were led by junior Ashley Hovda and freshman Lucinda Davies, each carding an 83 on Sunday to stand in a 14-way tie for 57th. Freshman Kandy Carland fired an 84 to stand in a tie for 71st, while sophomore Bianca Melone is tied for 80th with a first-round 86.
Western will continue play on Monday afternoon, with the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday afternoon from eastern North Carolina.
