Mobile, Ala. - Western Carolina women's golf stands tied for ninth after the opening round of Lady Jaguar Invitational at the par 72, 5,821-yard Azalea City Golf Course. Junior Malin Fryk led the Catamounts with a one-over, 73, to stand in a four-way tie for fourth place after the first 18 holes.

After experiencing a one-hour frost delay, Middle Tennessee State leads the 20-team field after shooting 299 in the first round, two strokes ahead of second place Jacksonville State at 301. Winthrop and Lamar stand tied for third at 303, with Belmont rounding out the top five with a team 305 through 18 holes. Samford's Katelyn Stanier was one of just two golfers to break par on the day, firing a three-under 69 to lead by two strokes.

Fryk was the lone Catamount to place inside the top 30 on Monday, with senior Bianca Melone standing tied for 31st two strokes in arrears with an opening round five-over, 77. Rounding out Western's scorers were junior Kandy Carland (t-45th, 78), Elin Mickelsson (t-66th, 80) and freshman Tiffany Schisler who shot 88 in her first-ever collegiate event.

Last season, Western shot 307 on the first day, but rebounded with a 297 in the second round to bounce back for a third-place team finish.

The second and final round begins on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 am.
