Kiawah Island, S.C. - Inclement weather which moved across the Eastern seaboard and prompted tournament officials to change the start on Tuesday ended up forcing the cancellation of the third round of the Cuthbert Cup, leaving second-round leaders as the event champions. Host College of Charleston claimed the women's team championship while UNC Wilmington was declared the men's champion, breaking the tie with Washington State based on the fifth player's score.

Western Carolina, which slipped from leading in the first round on the men's side and standing in second on the women's, finished sixth in both tournaments to open the spring portion of the schedule.

The final round, which began with a shotgun start at 8:00 am, was halted mid-afternoon with the combined field approximately six holes shy of completion. But with an increasing threat of bad weather, officials made the decision to end the tournament early, erasing play of the third day.

Charleston claimed the combined school championship for the overall inaugural Cuthbert Cup, edging UNC Wilmington for the top honors by two strokes,1163-to-1165. Maryland (1174) was third followed by Western Carolina (1186) in fourth.

On the women's side, Charleston's Steffi Kirchmayr and Courtney Brink shared the individual medalist honors, each carding 142. WCU's Desiree Karlsson, who was tied for first on the opening day, led the Catamounts with a third-place finish tied with four other players with a one-over, 145.

Freshman Josefine Sundh posted her career-best finish with the best two-round score of her rookie season. The Kumla, Sweden, native shot a 148 (72-76) to finish tied for 10th. Her classmate, Katja Dammann, wound up tied for 26th with a two-day score of 152, followed by sophomore Elin Mickelsson (t-43rd, 156) and senior Kandy Carland (67th, 175).

Western's women led the tournament with two eagles overall, while Sundh was tied for the lowest par 3 scoring (2.63, 3-under).

In the men's tournament, Maryland's Chris Gold claimed the medalist honors after shooting 137 (71-66) over the first two rounds to win by four strokes. Washington State's Nick Ellis and UNC Wilmington's Josh Brock each tied for second with identical scores of 141. WCU's Cuenca was just behind in a two-way tie for fourth-place with a final score of 142.

Behind Cuenca, senior Matt Cook made the biggest jump, chiseling seven strokes off his opening round 77 to shoot a two-under 70 to improve 18 positions in a tie for 22nd with freshman teammate, Caleb Marsh. The two each finished the event at a three-over, 147. Rounding out Western's scorers were junior Dustin Furnari tied for 33rd (150) and sophomore Ricky Stout in a tie for 47th (153).

The Catamount men ranked second in both par 3 and par 5 scoring for the tournament, shooting 4-over on the shortest holes and eight-under on the longest. WCU was also third in birdies with a combined 34.

Western's men return to action at the Callaway Golf Invitational, hosted by the University of San Diego, at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Sante Fe, Calif., March 11-12. The women return to action March 9-11 at the Pinehurst Challenge, again hosted by the College of Charleston, at Pinehurst #8.
