High Point, N.C. - Rain on an already wet course with showers and colder temperatures forecasted throughout the day on Tuesday have prompted tournament officials to cancel the second and final round of the HPU Classic that was scheduled for today at the High Point Country Club Willow Creek Golf Course.
The tournament has concluded after one round of play with the Catamounts in seventh out of the seven teams. Sophomore Maria Kjelldorff led WCU with an 18th-place finish after carding 80 on Monday with freshman Mariah Hopkins a stroke in arrears in a tie for 20th.
Morehead State was declared the rain-shortened tournament team champion in the first-ever event hosted by High Point. MSU carded a team 308 to edge second-place Elon (311) by three strokes. The host Panthers were third with a round of 315, followed by Gardner-Webb (319) and Appalachian State (322) rounding out the top five. Winthrop finished sixth at 326, seven strokes ahead of WCU in seventh at 333.
Western Carolina returns to action March 8-10 at the Eagle Landing Invitational, hosted by James Madison University at the Eagle Landing Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. It is the first of back-to-back events in the Sunshine State for the Catamounts. WCU finished 13th as a team in last year's event.
