Kiawah Island, S.C. - Led by two individual first-day leaders, the Western Carolina men's and women's golf teams stand tied for first and alone in second, respectively, after day one action from the Cuthbert Cup tournament at the Osprey and Cougar Point Courses. Junior Andres Cuenca paced the men's squad with a five-under 67, while sophomore Desiree Karlsson led the women in a four-way tie for first with a three-under, 69, on Sunday.

Round two is scheduled to tee off at 8:30 am on Monday morning. The women will play the Osprey Point Course (par-72, 6,834 yards) while the men will tackle the Cougar Point Course (par-72, 6,757 yards).

The tournament, which includes both men's and women's teams playing between the two courses, will crown a women's champion, a men's champion and an overall combined school champion including both with the men's and women's scores on Tuesday afternoon.

WCU currently stands second in the school portion of the event with a combined stroke average of 293, two strokes in arrears of the College of Charleston at 291. UNC Wilmington is in third (294.5) followed by Maryland at 296.

Cuenca holds a two-stroke advantage over Washington State's Nick Ellis after the opening round on Sunday. Freshman Caleb Marsh wound up tied for 12th through the first 18 holes with a one-over, 73. Sophomore Ricky Stout and junior Dustin Funari are tied for 34th with identical scores of 76, with senior Matt Cook in the club house tied for 40th with a five-over, 77.

WCU is tied with both Washington State and Richmond after carding a team, 292, through the first 18 holes. UNC Wilmington stands fourth, one stroke in arrears with the host College of Charleston in fifth at 295, three strokes off the pace.

Karlsson has company atop the women's leaderboard after three women shot three-under, 69, on Sunday. Miami's Christina Hirano and Charleston's Courtney Brink equaled Karlsson's opening day, with the Cougar's Steffi Kirchmayr one stroke back in fourth.

Behind Karlsson, freshman Josefine Sundh carded an even-par 72 to stand tied for seventh, while classmate Katja Dammann is tied for 14th with consecutive nine-hole scores of 37 for a two-over, 74. Sophomore Elin Mickelsson is tied for 41st at 79, while senior Kandy Carland stands 58th (83).

College of Charleston leads the women's tournament by seven strokes over Western (287-to-294), with Miami (FL) in third one stroke behind the Catamounts. Maryland and UNC Wilmington are just two strokes back, tied for fourth with 36 holes to play.

Second round action is scheduled to being Monday with tee times beginning at 8:15 am. For Western's men, Cook will tee off first at 10:45 am with Cuenca stepping into the tee box at 11:21 am. On the women's side, Carland goes off at 11:09 am, with Karlsson in the final group at 11:45 am.
