Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's basketball team recently traveled out to the "Golden State" of California to participate in the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic, a tournament in which the team placed second after defeating the host team, 70-67, but fell to Utah in the championship game.
Although the Catamounts were out there to play ball, the team was able to take a break from basketball to get out and see the sights of the San Francisco bay area. Upon arriving in California, the team made its way down to the Fisherman's Warf on the bay to take in some shopping and a view of Alcatraz Island. Along the way, the group was entertained by street performers and amazed by the sight of the lit up city skyline once the sun went down. A few even caught a ride on one of San Francisco's famous cable cars.
After a Thursday morning practice, the team crossed over the Golden Gate Bridge en route to Muir Woods National Park. The park features the famous redwood trees that tower over the rest of the forest. Muir Woods was declared a National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, becoming the seventh National Monument, and named after conservationist John Muir. The park takes up a total of 554 acres and over 825,000 people visit the park every year.
After a day of practice and park-going, the group came together for a traditional Thanksgiving meal prepared just for the team by the hotel restaurant. The Lady Catamount basketball "family" had a great holiday out in sunny California.
