CULLOWHEE, N.C. -Western Carolina women's basketball (4-3) opens Southern Conference play at 2 p.m. Saturday hosting Davidson (3-4). The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team plays UNCG at 4:30 p.m.
MENENDEZ SOCON STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Senior guard Kaila'Shea Menendez was named Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of November 30. She helped the Catamounts to a 1-1 record last week. She averaged 11.5 points in two games, scoring in the double figures against Tennessee Tech and Georgia State. Menendez has now recorded double figures in six of the first seven games this season. Menendez scored the last two field goals to power Western Carolina over Tennessee Tech, 61-58, on Saturday. Her 12 points in that game was a team-high. Menendez scored 11 points against Georgia State on Tuesday and recorded a career-high five steals. The Raleigh, N.C. native maintains a 3.32 GPA in sociology. Menendez is the first women's basketball player to be awarded this honor since Brooke Johnsonon January 21, 2009.
LYON PICKS UP HER GAME: Sophomore guard Kristen Lyonscored a career-high 10 points against Georgia State on Tuesday ... She also connected on a career-best five field goals ... After coming on in a reserve position in the first half, Lyon got the start to begin the second half of play against the Lyons ... In the last three games, Lyon has averaged 7.7 points per game and shot 45.8 percent from the field.
