SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Makensey Campbell, a guard on the Western Carolina women's basketball team, has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for Nov. 27, the league office announced Wednesday.
Campbell, a junior Biology major from Kingsport, Tenn., boasts a 3.98 GPA. This is Campbell's second SoCon Student Athlete of the Week honor in her career and the first for Catamount Athletics this season.
In the last week, Campbell helped Western Carolina to a 3-0 record with wins at home against UNC Asheville (62-51) and Georgia State (74-61) and a road win at Appalachian State (71-63) to open Southern Conference play.
Campbell scored in double figures in two of the three games, just missing double figures with nine against UNCA. She had 12 points against Georgia State. In the win at Appalachian State, Campbell led the team with 18 points and drained four three-pointers.
In the three games, Campbell averaged 13 points and four rebounds per game. She also had six three pointers, shooting 66.7 percent from behind the arch and shot 50 percent from the field.
Western Carolina returns home Sunday at 5 p.m. to host future Southern Conference opponent East Tennessee State University (ETSU). The Catamounts are riding a three-game winning streak.
