FEEMSTER'S BLOG ON PLAYING NORTH CAROLINA

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball tips off the 2008-09 season Friday traveling to Chapel Hill to take on No. 4 North Carolina at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Preseason WNIT. Steven Crumpler, voice of Lady Catamount basketball, will be broadcasting the game which can be heard on Power 90 dot five.

This is the first appearance in the Preseason WNIT for Western Carolina, however, the club has made two straight appearances in the Postseason WNIT. The Lady Catamounts will be facing North Carolina for the 12th time in school history, with the Tarheels carrying a record of 8-3 against WCU. In the two clubs last meeting, in 2006, North Carolina defeated Western Carolina 87-58.

Western Carolina is coming off a 75-45 victory over Brevard College in its lone exhibition game. Junior guard Heather Swayne came off the bench to score 11 points for the Lady Catamounts while fellow junior Kristen Feemster added 10 rebounds.

It also saw the return of senior forward Brooke Johnson who missed the majority of the 2007-08 season due to an injury she suffered on December 20. Johnson played 17 minutes in the contest and scored four points and pulled down two rebounds.

Western Carolina is 24-19 in season-opening games, however the club is just 7-11 when opening the season on the road. Under Head Coach Kellie Harper, Western Carolina is 1-3 in opening season games.

No matter the outcome against North Carolina, Western Carolina is guaranteed two additional games in the WNIT Tournament. Should the Lady Catamounts defeat the Tarheels, WCU would play again on November 16. In the event Western Carolina losses to UNC, the Lady Catamounts will begin play in the consolation bracket either November 21 or 22 at a determined host school.
