CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball opens the 2013-14 season on the road 5 p.m. Friday at Mercer in Macon, Ga.
The Catamounts previewed the upcoming season Nov. 2 defeating Brevard College, in the Ramsey Center, 72-52 in an exhibition game. Four Western Carolina players scored in double figures paced by junior transfer guard Justin Taylor who had 16 points. Senior guard Rena Wakama added 14, sophomore forward Erika Joseph had 11 and junior guard Makensey Campbell scored 10.
The game is also Mercer's season opener. The Bears, who will be joining the Southern Conference in the 2014-15 season, defeated Northwood 108-61 in an exhibition contest on Oct. 31.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two schools with Mercer holding a 4-0 advantage over Western Carolina. The Catamounts and Bears haven't met since Nov. 19, 1999 when Mercer defeated WCU in Macon 76-70.
Western Carolina is 24-20 in opening season games dating back to 1968. Under fifth-year Head Coach Karen Middleton, the Catamounts are 2-2 in opening season contests.
The game against Mercer is the first of three straight road games, to start the season, for Western Carolina. The Catamounts travel to Georgia Tech Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip-off and then to Campbell Nov. 16 with a 7 p.m. start time.
