Women's Basketball Named to 2012-13 WBCA Academic Top 25

July 18, 2013

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -Western Carolina women's basketball has been named to the 2012-13 WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Academic Top 25 tied for 14th with a combined team GPA of 3.491.

"We are extremely proud, once again, of our team and their continued excellence in the classroom" said head coach Karen Middleton. "We are honored to achieve another national ranking and back-to-back spots on the WBCA Top-25 Honor Roll. Our program takes great pride in representing Western Carolina University and showing the ongoing excellence that our athletic department and university stands for."

This is the sixth time in Catamount women's basketball history the team has earned a place on the WBCA Academic Top-25. In 2012, Western Carolina was ranked 13th, eighth in 2009, had its highest ranking with a fifth place spot in 2008, 15th in 2007 and sixth in 2001.

"Thank you to the WBCA for recognizing all programs that have excelled in the classroom this year," Middleton said.

The Catamounts are the only Southern Conference member team to earn a spot in the 2012-13 WBCA Academic Top-25. The Catamounts are still the highest placing conference team in the history of the WBCA Academic Top-25 and the only team to earn a spot on the list multiple times. Appalachian State was ranked 25th in 1999 and Chattanooga earned a 23rd ranking in 2000.

Utah Valley is No. 1 on the NCAA Division I honor roll for the second time with a 3.639 team GPA.

"The GPAs produced this year by each of the Top 25 teams are quite remarkable," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "The coaches of these teams have done a terrific job encouraging their student-athletes to perform at their best both on the court and in the classroom. Congratulations to these 114 programs. I wish them each continued success."

The WBCA Academic Top 25 annually recognizes NCAA Divisions I, II and III; NAIA; and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined grade point averages (GPAs) inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2012-13 season is the 18th in which the WBCA has produced the honor rolls.

A team's GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans. Weighted grades are converted to a 4.0 scale. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Teams are nominated for the honor by a WBCA-member head coach. A team must have a 3.000 or better GPA to be nominated.
