2009-10 Western Carolina Women's Basketball Schedule
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina University Head Women's Basketball Coach Karen Middleton today announced the 2009-10 schedule which includes a trip to the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout and match-ups with three teams that were involved in post-season play a year ago.
"We are very excited about our schedule this season," Middleton said. "The challenges of our non-conference schedule will help us prepare for the very competitive Southern Conference."
The Lady Catamounts schedule begins on the road, to start the season, with visits to the University of Richmond and East Carolina. Then, in just the third game of the season, Western Carolina plays its first SoCon game, hosting Wofford in the Ramsey Center on November 20.
After the meeting with the Terriers, Western Carolina heads north to participate in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska. The Lady Catamounts could possibly face host Alaska (UAA), Coastal Carolina or Cincinnati in the two-day tournament which begins November 24. This is Western Carolina University's second trip to Alaska in the last two years as the men's basketball team finished fourth at the Great Alaska Shoot-out last winter. It is also the Lady Catamount's second Alaska trip as WCU won the North Star Invitational, hosted by Alaska-Fairbanks, in 2004-05.
The remaining non-conference opponents include a pair of teams that made a post-season appearance in 2009. Charlotte played in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 65-52 to Purdue, and James Madison reached the second round of the WNIT and will be making it's first-ever trip to Cullowhee. The Lady Catamounts will host rival UNC Asheville on December 2, travel to Charlotte (December 8), Western Kentucky (December 12) and close out 2009 at Florida State on December 30.
Amidst the non-conference games in December is a home date with Davidson on December 5 and a road trip to Statesboro, Ga. to take on Georgia Southern on December 19. The 17 remaining Southern Conference games begin when WCU hosts Furman January 2. A meeting with Chattanooga, who played in the 2009 WNIT, will close out the home games for Western Carolina on Feb. 22.
"We are looking forward to building on the exciting championship run from last season," Middleton said. We are striving to once again compete in the NCAA Tournament."
The 2010 Southern Conference Tournament will be held in Charlotte, N.C. March 4-8 between the Bojangle's and Time Warner Arena.
