Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina had 13 student-athletes recognized as the Southern Conference today announced its TIAA-CREF Academic All-Conference teams for the 2005-06 winter season. A total of 123 student-athletes, representing every SoCon institution were named to the team with an average grade point average of 3.55 on a 4.0 scale.

Ten of Western's 13 selections were members of the women's indoor track & field team, with the men's squad placing two on the honorary squad and women's basketball having one selection eligible this season. The Catamounts did increase the number of selections this year by one as a dozen WCU student-athletes were honored last season by the SoCon.

Conference-wide, the men's and women's indoor track and field squads combined for 88 student-athletes on the academic team with women's basketball adding 17. Appalachian State had the most individuals selected with 16 honorees, followed by Western Carolina and UNC Greensboro each with 13.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the winter. This is the third year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season. The all-academic teams are made possible by a grant from the Southern Conference's Education Partner, TIAA-CREF.
