Spartanburg, S.C. - The Southern Conference has announced its 2004 Postgraduate Scholarships recipients and Western Carolina women's basketball senior Yoneko Allen, along with men's basketball senior Emre Atsur, have each been awarded the Mike Wood Foundation Graduate Scholarship.

The Mike Wood Scholarship, worth $2,000 to pursue a graduate degree at the school of their choice, is awarded to student-athletes competing in men's basketball, as well as a female athlete with preference given to those participating in basketball. Also, to be eligible, the student-athlete must be a varsity letter-winner and have completed eligibility or be actively competing in the last season of eligibility in his/her sport, or be in the fourth year of attendance at a Conference school. Preference is given to those majoring in business or a related field and they must have demonstrated leadership skills in athletics and/or extra curricular organizations on campus.

Allen, a senior guard from Gray Court, S.C., averaged 9.8 points per game this season along with leading the conference in 3-point fields goals made and her team in minutes played. The three-year Lady Catamount captain closed out her career as the WCU record holder in five categories and appears on the school's single-season and career top 10 lists nine other times. She is a triple major in Business Administration and Law, Marketing, and Sports Management, and boasts a 3.98 GPA. A former member of WCU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Allen has earned Verizon Academic All-District III first team honors twice and second team honors once, along with being named to the Academic All-America third team in 2004. She has additionally been a two-time Arthur Ashe, Jr., Scholar Athlete and a two-time WCU Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Senior guard Emre Atsur has been named the male recipient of the Mike Wood Postgraduate Scholarship as awarded by the Southern Conference.


Atsur, a senior guard from Istanbul, Turkey, started nearly half of his team's basketball games in 2003-04 and averaged 6.3 points per game while playing an average of 20.6 minutes per game. He finished his WCU career with 81 3-pointers made, ranking ninth on the school's all-time list. Atsur has been a member of the Catamounts' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three consecutive seasons, and he has participated in service to the community by reading to area elementary school children, participating in free basketball clinics for area youth and serving meals to the less fortunate at the Community Table of Sylva. Atsur will graduate with a degree in international business.

Other SoCon 2004 award winners include Dave Hart Graduate Scholarship recipient Bill Brehmer of the College of Charleston, Dorothy Hicks Graduate Scholarship recipient Rebekah Potts of Furman, TIAA-CREF Graduate Scholarship recipient Leigh Anne Hoskins of Davidson, Sony Graduate Scholarship recipient Christa Hicks of Appalachian State and David Knight Graduate Scholarship recipient Justin Porter.
