Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball player Yoneko Allen has been officially named a finalist from Region 3 for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, it was announced by Terri Howes (West Virginia), the chair of the regional selection committee. Allen is one of 10 finalists out of a pool of 33 student-athletes who were nominated from within the region, which consists of Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

The Gray Court, S.C., native has already been selected as the recipient of the Mike Wood Postgraduate Scholarship as awarded by the Southern Conference. Allen has been recognized numerous times throughout her career for her outstanding achievements both on and off the court. Most recently, she has been named to the Academic All-America third team after appearing on the All-District team for three consecutive years. The senior guard ended her distiguished career at Western as the school's all-time leader in career 3-pointers made (180) and attempted (542), as well as holding the single-season records in 3-pointers made (67 in 2003), attempted (202 in 2004) and 3-pointers made per game (2.4 in 2003).

Allen was also named the 2002 WCU Female Scholar Athlete of the Year as well as being a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Athlete. She currently boasts a 3.98 grade point average as a triple major in Business Administration & Law, Sport Management and Marketing.

The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their last year of intercollegiate athletics competition. Nominees must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.200 (based on a 4.000 scale), be nominated by the faculty athletics representative or athletics director, and intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a part-time or full-time graduate student.

The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. For each sports season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, nonrenewable grants. The NCAA Postgradute Scholarship Committee will make the final selections for the winter sports at its April 25 meeting.
