Women's Basketball Hands Out Awards at End of Year Banquet

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball hosted its end of the year banquet on Thursday, March 22 and also handed out team awards.

Kaila'Shea Menendez was given the Team MVP honor. Menendez closed out her career at Western Carolina with numerous accolades and highlights. She was named to the 2012 Southern Conference Tournament Second Team and also voted All-Southern Conference in the Southern Conference Coaches' poll. Mendendez scored in double figures 19 times and led the team averaging 12.2 points per game. She eclipsed 1,000 points in her career and ended with 1,151 points ranking her 18th in all-time scoring in the Catamount record books. Her 73 career made three pointers ranked her 10th in the Catamount record books and her 342 made free throws was good for second.

Sophomore forward Shauna Terry received the Most Improved Award. She had a season-best 43 blocks in 2011-12. The 67 blocks for her career ranks her seventh in the Catamount record books. She ranked third on the season for rebounds with 111, averaging 3.7 rebounds per game.

The Best Defense Award was given to redshirt junior Diamond Hunnicutt. She played in all 31 games this season and started 17. Hunnicutt ripped down a season-best 102 rebounds averaging 3.29 per game. She also scored the most points of her career, in a season, with 133 averaging 4.3 points per game.

Sophomore forward Alex Abraham was rewarded with her break-out season by being given the Coach's Award. Abraham earned a starting spot in the Catamount lineup this season, starting in 23 of the 29 games she played. She upped her scoring averaging from 1.4 as a freshman to 5.1 in her sophomore campaign. Abraham also more than tripled her scoring output with 147 in contrast to 41 as a freshman. She ended the season scoring in double figures five times with a career-high 14 points against College of Charleston on November 14, 2011.
