ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball placed two on the 2014 Southern Conference All-Tournament team, after reaching the semi-finals of the tournament, before falling to Davidson 74-67 on Sunday. Junior guard Justin Taylor was named to the first team while senior guard Rena Wakama was honored with a second team selection.
Taylor, from Gastonia, N.C., who scored a career-high 26 points in the 75-70 quarterfinal win over Furman, averaged 21.7 points per game in the Catamounts' three games in the tournament. She scored in double figures in all three games including twice scoring 20 or more points. Taylor was also a perfect 19-for-19 from the free throw line, hitting 13-of-13 from the charity stripe against Furman, and also shot 58.1 percent from the field.
Fellow guard and teammate Wakama, from Raleigh, N.C., averaged 12.7 points per game in the tournament and shot 40 percent from the field. She scored in double figures in two of the three games and was the catalyst for the Catamounts' comeback and victory over Furman.
This is the first time since 2009 Western Carolina has had multiple players on the SoCon All-Tournament Team. Brooke Johnson was on the First Team, and named Tournament MVP, and Emily Clarke was a second team selection in 2009.
